- Winternachten / Krusa Laman Curacao 17 and 18 April
'A sense of belonging', is the theme of a combined writers' tour by Winternachten to the Dutch Carribean and Suriname.
The theme A Sense of Belonging is also present in the public performances. There are the readings of the authors, but besides this the visual artist Frouwkje Smit has made an artistic slideshow with pictures of a number of well known and lesser known people from the island, including writers and artists. Al the authors were asked to choose their favourite spot on Curaçao, where they feel most at home. They also chose a text with the spot. The slideshow is combined with music, and will be shown on Friday 16 April in Villa Maria, Scharloo.
On the 17th of April, the will show a sort fragment of my film The missing book.

- War: Are we accomplices?
Video artist Frouwkje Smit challenges her colleague artists and the audience in a confronting dialogue.
During the Open Studios Zeeburg festival, Frouwkje Smit will be showing her latest documentary The Missing Book in Crossfire Project Base in Pakhuis Wilhelmina, Amsterdam. The documentary will be shown non-stop on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th 2009.
In The Missing Book, the politically engaged author Koulsy Lamko from Chad tells us about his struggle with his book Darfur that got lost when his computers were stolen. Also, he talks about war and how we all become accomplices if we passively watch things happen and keep our silence.
With this video, Froukje Smit wants to start an open dialogue with her audience and fellow artists. The internationally oriented exhibition will be brought about in collaboration with performers Giovanna Giorli (Italy), Sarah and Freya Eshuys (the Netherlands) and Teresa Maria Diaz Nerio (Dominican Republic), visual artist Sithabile Mlotshwa (Zimbabwe) and journalist and writer Jona Dekker (the Netherlands). Their work will be shown during the entire weekend on the 18th and 19th of April.
The Missing Book
Koulsy Lamko, a renowned writer from Chad, has been living as a Writer in Residence in the Anne Frank House at the Merwedeplein in Amsterdam when his two computers are stolen. It happens on January 1st 2009, on a quiet afternoon. The city is still slumbering, when Lamko unexpectedly loses all of his work, and in particular his book Darfur. Ever since, he tried to rewrite this book, but he has not succeeded in finding the right words, not the energy, to do so.
In The Missing Book, Koulsy Lamko tells us about his struggle with his ‘lost book’, about war, about freedom and about our being accomplices to war. His story is told in the peaceful, yet wry environment of the Anne Frank house. The documentary shows us Lamko sitting in front of Anne Frank’s bedroom window, in the very house where her family lived from 1933 until July 1942. This is where Anne Frank got her first diary, this is where she started writing, still living in freedom until she and her family were forced to go into hiding in the Achterhuis, the back part of a canal house at the Prinsengracht.

On behalf of IFAA organisation, I am pleased to formally invite you to participate in the grand opening of the IFAA Festival 2008. The opening celebration will take place on Sunday, December 7th at 14.00 at Lux Nijmegen.The International Festival of the Arts in Arnhem (IFAA 2008) is a new festival that aims for international exchange among Europe, Africa, America and Asia. The theme of the festival is "Art, Migration and Identity".
While the main festival is a 6 day celebration, running from the 7th until 13th of December 2008, the opening day will be a special day, including music performance by Dos Cuerdas and Simin Tander, dance performances from Nigeria, Italy and Aceh region (Indonesia).
The day will be all about celebrating cultural diversity, indoor and outdoor. There will be performances from all over the world, ending with a multicultural buffet. You will be welcomed by two unique art installations built outside the Lux Theatre by Mr. Bright Ugochukwu Eke (Nigeria) and Mr. Rob Sweere (NL).

Veiling
Vrijdag 21 november is er een kunstveiling in galerie 23 in Amsterdam. Tijdens deze veiling wordt werk van de kunstenaars van IFAA geveild. De opbrengst zal naar het project gaan. De veilingmeester deze avond is Abdelkader Benali. Toegang is gratis, aanvang 19:00 uur.
Artist in residency, IFAA
Vanaf 22 september verblijf ik voor 3 maanden in Arnhem, als een artist in residence. Samen met verschillende kunstenaars uit Afrika en Europa, het thema is “Kunst, Migratie en Identiteit”. Begin december komt er een tentoonstelling in Arnhem en Nijmegen. In het nieuwe jaar gaat de tentoonstelling reizen door Nederland. Zie voor meer informatie: http://ifaa-net.eu
Workshop voor project IFAA

Tentoonstelling Eindexamen Master Fotografie St.Joost.
Van 28 juni tot en met 5 juli.
Opening: Vrijdag 27 juni om 17:00 uur.
Locatie: Voormalig NFM Witte de Withstraat 63, Rotterdam.
De 5 studenten die dit jaar afstuderen aan de Master Fotografie opleiding presenteren hun eindexamenprojecten. De Master Fotografie aan AKV|St.Joost is de enige in zijn soort in Nederland. Op Master niveau vindt er in twee jaar verdieping plaats op het gebied van de documentaire fotografie. De studenten zijn internationaal en komen zowel uit binnen- en buitenland. Ze worden begeleid door toonaangevende binnen- en buitenlandse (gast)docenten.
Michael Anhalt (*1976, Weimar) bevraagt in de installatie Protagonist het gebruik van fotografisch amateurbeeld als bewijsmateriaal maar ook als herinnering van een verdwenen realiteit. In een installatie contrasteert Anhalt de verschillende waarheiden in relatie met de auteur.
Meike Eggers (*1973, Flensburg) beseft dat voor het eerst in de geschiedenis meer beelden gemaakt worden door amateurs dan door professionals. Met haar installatie en publicatie Pyjamocracy confronteert Eggers de kijker met de invloed van deze ontwikkeling op de perceptie van de realiteit en de gevolgen ervan.
Tryntsje Nauta (*1981, Beetgumermolen) maakt uiterst geconcentreerde portretten van kinderen. De beelden tonen kinderen met een bepaald zelfbewustzijn dat heel volwassen lijkt, terwijl tegelijkertijd de kwetsbaarheid van het kind-zijn er doorheen sijpelt. Wanneer houdt een kind op kind te zijn? Die vraag lijken de portretten de kijker voor te houden.
In de korte film Blackboard, toont Frouwkje Smit (*1980, Assen) verhalen van Afrikanen die zij in Nederland heeft ontmoet. Hierin laat zij zien in hoeverre deze mensen zich ontworteld voelen in het land van herkomst en in hun nieuwe land. Via het schoolbord komen hun verhalen tot leven; de beelden en woorden worden uitgebeeld, opgeschreven, weggeveegd en vereeuwigd.
De fotoserie Truckers Paradise van Suzanne Valkenburg (*1981, Arnhem) is een fotografische roadmovie. In haar serie staat de romantiek voor het mobiele bestaan en de snelweg centraal. Vanuit de cabine van een vrachtwagen neemt Valkenburg de kijker mee op reis.
